G.E
FREE AND AN ORGANIC NEW ZEALAND
What
do Rabbits And Opposums Have In Common With Ge Food?
Nothing,
Other Than Once They Are Let Loose In New Zealand
You Can’t Get Rid Of Them !
Opossums
are treated like the Koala in Australia but they are pests in
New Zealand
Look at the efforts the Dept of Conservation (DOC) in New Zealand
have had to go to, to control the opposum population from destroyng
our Native Forests , the dropping ( the
controversial Poison 1080) also claimed by many concerned
New Zealanders to KILL our Native Birds and pets, disputed by
DOC.
Rabbits
were originally introduced into New Zealand in the 1900 s
for sport!
Well
(some of the same Farmers that support the introduction of GE
crops ) are not so happy with their ancestor's for introducing
rabbits to New Zealand, because of the damage they do by eat good
pastures. causing erosion ,damaging crops and pastures and reduce
farm income as a consequence .
This also costs New Zealand millions of dollars a year in lost
feed and in eradication.
HISTORY and HINDSIGHT are wonderful things,
what will the Next generation think of us if we let GE Crops into
New Zealand
( Untested like Opposums and Rabbits)
and Potentially much more destructive.
ORGANIC
AND GE FREE
Lets keep Politics out of the debate, unfortunately it's always
there, on both sides, as you have the Greens and others against
it and the Biotechnology companies for (the economic saviour of
NZ) lobbying ( some times bribing) to get it passed.
I
guess it will come down to who ever has the Political Power, or
the strongest lobby group or the money or both.
In
my opinion we are better off to keep
NEW ZEALAND
GE FREE and
ORGANIC
WHY? YOU ASK...
BECAUSE IT MAKES COMMON AND ECONOMIC SENSE.
WHATS
WRONG WITH GENETICALLY ENGINEERING FOOD?
WHO
Knows and that is precisely my point!
No long term human-safety tests have been conducted on the consumption
of genetically engineered food.
Nor has there ever been a thorough environmental assessment to
see what happens when these plants are released into the ecosystem.
The
First Evidence is Worrying!
Just like chemical farming in the 40s hailed with such fervor
that the inventor of DDT won a nobel prize, biotechnology is showing
a dark side.
Genetic pollution from pollen drift is spreading throughout North
America's farmland, costing millions in lost export sales.
In
Iowa, corn farmers plant 1 % of their crop in GE "Starlink" seed,
not approved for human consumption. Within 12 months, 50% of the
entire Iowa corn crop tested positive for traces of the Starlink
gene, according to David Gould of Farm Verified Organic .
Scientific
American reported that GE canola contained a herbicide resistant
gene, has spawned " Super Weeds" in Canada that are resistant
to known herbicides.
A
moratorium on GE crops for 20 years and mandatory labelling is
needed.
We
believe there must be a moratorium on the planting of GE crops
worldwide for 20 years pending environmental and human-safety
studies.
Until such time as the technology is proven safe, all foods containing
GE ingredients ( including the finished product ie A big brand
hamburger which uses a bread roll made from GE flour) be labelled.
As no body know what GE could do to our environment could easily
be another failed experiment like Oppossum and rabbits.
Look
at the trouble MAF is having getting rid of another unwanted pest
the painted apple moth.
How could you trust the good honest scientists from Monsanto and
Tyson or others with such a history of high moral and ethical
standards.
They
make even the Tobacco companies look like angels!
PROFIT
Being an Island GE FREE and Organic by 2020 will give us a definite
edge. Organic produce already sells worldwide for a premium and
we can not keep up with the demand.
Niche farming gives us a high value through differentiation lets
get known as clean green and organic and GE FREE.
Why
it is a good idea to eat certified organic food?
WHAT'S
WRONG WITH CONVENTIONAL AGRICULTURE?
In the late 40,s farming changed radically in North America .
Toxic chemicals aimed at killing pests ( pesticides ) and weed
( herbicides) became widely available to farmers as did synthetic
chemical fertilizers (Super phosphate).
This
new chemical farming technology was revolutionary. Pests and weeds
were virtually eradicated. Crop yields soared per acre corn yields
rose from 26 bushels on 1926 to 127 bushels in 1996. Millions
of pounds of toxic chemicals were subsequently poured onto North
American fields.
But
no long term testing had ever been conducted on this new technology.
Very quickly things started to go wrong. Both insects and weeds
developed resistance to chemicals. Ever more powerful toxins were
needed. Many of these new agri-toxins were indiscriminate, killing
everything they touched including the soil.
By late 80s, chemical farming was being seen in a different light.
Despite the fact that pesticide use in the United Stated increased
1000% between 1945 and 1989, crop loss almost doubled from 7%
to 13%.
Data
from over 68,000 groundwater wells in 45 U.S states indicate pesticides
in more than 16,000 of them. U.S. Geological Survey data released
in 1998 revealed nearly all streams they studied contained at
least one pesticide, the result of agricultural run-off from farm
fields ( similar results have been found in New Zealand and Australia)
Testing of foods eaten by consumers routinely shows pesticide
residues.
Even the U.S Congress is now concerned about the impact of the
9,700 approved agricultural toxins on the nation's children after
the National Research Council concluded in 1993 that " some children
were ingesting enough pesticides to harm them, even though their
food was within Federal limits."
The Food Quality Protection Act was passed in 1996 to reassess
the standards for pesticides in food. But I suggest you do not
wait for their assessment. You have options, eat only certified
organic foods and live long and well.
WHAT'S
GOOD ABOUT CERTIFIED ORGANIC GOODNESS?
Good Food
No synthetic pesticides
No synthetic herbicides
No synthetic chemical fertilizers
No preservatives or additives
No GE ingredients
No irradiation
Better ecology
Enriched, drought resistant soil
Less soil erosion
Less groundwater pollution
Improved farm biodiversity
WHAT'S
RIGHT WITH ORGANIC AGRICULTURE?
Organic farmers replace Toxic chemicals pesticides, herbicides,
and fertilisers with different agricultural methods that improve
soil fertility and biological diversity.
They control weeds and insects with time proven techniques such
as crop rotation, cultivation, mulching, manure spreading, and
the encouragement of " beneficials- predator insects that keep
pests in check.
These methods radically change the farm environment, producing
a dramatic drop in poisonous run-off and an equally dramatic improvement
in the soil ecology.
Organic farms routinely see less soil erosion and more variety
of animal species and micro-organisms in the fields. No genetically
engineered crops ( GMOs) are planted , or allowed.
Similarly , a certified organic food processor avoids many techniques
of conventional manufacturing.
No preservatives, additives or food colouring etc that would degrade
the quality of the organic crop is used.
Organic
and conventional ingredients are not mixed. Organic raw materials
must be specially handled to prevent contamination from bacteria,
micro-toxins, and industrial chemicals.
No
genetically engineered or irradiated ingredients are allowed.
From farm gate to factory door, organic food adds up to a better
product
IS
ORGANIC HEALTHIER?
Organic food is based on an agricultural growing method and was
never intended to be a health claim. But since organic farmers
don't use Agri-Toxins, many credible studies have pointed to health
and quality implications.
In a landmark 1999 study of USDA pesticide residue data in produce,
Consumers Report® found " organic foods had consistently minimal
or no-existent pesticide residue" when compared to conventional
produce.
Recently, the United Nation's Food and Health Organization ( FAO)
reported that " organically produced foods have lower levels of
pesticide and veterinary drug residues and , in many cases, lower
nitrate contents… in addition, the 'oragnic label provides assurance
to consumers that no food ingredient has been subjected to irradiation
and the GMO's, (genetically modified organism) ie GE have been
excluded."
